Rep. Juan Vargas’ Statement on Supreme Court Decision to End Census Count Early

Washington, D.C. (October 14, 2020) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to grant the administration’s request to halt Census counting before October 31.

“The U.S. Supreme Court decision to end the Census 2020 count early will impact our communities for at least a decade. As it is, the Census 2020 count faced many challenges this year—from the COVID-19 pandemic to interference from the Trump Administration. This is unconstitutional and unacceptable. Representation matters now more than ever.

“Time and time again, the Census has missed millions of us—including communities of color, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, immigrants, and refugees, people with low incomes or experiencing homelessness, and young children. Rushing our Census count during a pandemic is another one of the Trump administration’s attempts to hurt our most vulnerable communities.

“At this point, we do not know when the Census Bureau will officially close their count. However, there is still time to participate and secure the political power and federal funding that our communities rightfully deserve. Everyone must participate today. Households may still respond online at 2020Census.gov or by calling 844-330-2020.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress.
